About three weeks ago I decided that we would have breakfast for dinner (I believe it is called 'brinner'); I was planning on cooking the usual - sausage, eggs, and pancakes. So, I proceeded to begin cooking the sausage patties just as instructed on the package and went to get the pancake mix out from the pantry, only to discover that we had enough mix to make about 1/2 of a pancake. Okay, so we will have eggs and sausage, and maybe English muffins. As I was cracking the eggs in the pan, I noticed that the yolks were fluorescent green and smelled like an outhouse, which I'm sure can never be a good thing. Now we're down to sausage and English muffins. So assuming, having followed the directions, the sausage is done, I take it out and attempt to serve it, only to find that it isn't even cooked yet...so back in the pan it goes. Eventually, Ryan & I were able to enjoy a dinner of sausage patties and English muffins. According to Ryan, this was the worst.
So, this brings me to today - I am confident that I have had by far the worst experience of my entire life; Emerson had to go in for her first round of immunizations. I was worried about this all day long and I tried to explain to Emerson what would happen at the doctors and she just kept smiling at me. She had one oral immunization, which was not a problem, however, the problem lied in the three injections that went into her tiny little thighs. My poor little baby turned the brightest shade of red, cried like I have never heard her cry before, and shed a lot of big tears. I was able to hold her while they conducted this torture, so I was able to soothe her a bit.... I think I needed, and still need, more soothing than Emerson did. She seems to have forgotten about the events of this afternoon and is back to cooing and smiling. I still feel like I need a Xanax.
In other, and happier, news from the doctor: Emerson weighs 10 lbs. 14.5 oz, which puts her at the 50th percentile for weight, and is 24.5 inches long, which puts her at the 95th percentile for height. She is one tall, skinny baby....

Happy Mother's Day!
Although the weather was rainy and windy, I had a fabulous first mother's day. Emerson slept until 7:30 and Ryan & I both got naps in while Emerson took her afternoon nap. That was what I told Ryan I wanted for mother's day - a nap and to sleep through the night! Our friends Brian & Shannon and their son Will came over in the evening to give us this hideous wooden bird that nicely complements the three legged pig they had given us a few years ago (they like to find odd things to give us). Both are currently displayed inside of our entertainment center. Now the challenge is to find something even more hideous to give them..... it is a good thing our neighborhood garage sales are this weekend. All six of us went out for a nice dinner.........at Steak & Shake. Not even kidding; we have very few non smoking restaurants here in Kalamazoo and Steak & Shake happens to be one (of maybe a total of three). And finally, as my real mother's day gift, Ryan got me a very beautiful necklace that has both my birthstone and Emerson's. It is perfect - Ryan always does such a good job!!
In other news, I started back at school this past week. I'm taking one class online right now, so I've added that to the mix of my 'housewife' duties. I'll take another independent study class from WMU that starts at the end of June and then take my final class starting in September; I'll have my master's done in December - thank God!
Emerson got together with Sophia (and Charlie) twice last week- or actually I got together with Missy and Emerson & Sophia were also there, unbeknownst to them - for a walk at the Celery Flats and a barbecue at our house. Both still oblivious to the other even though they are friends..

How lovely are the branches
For those of you who have been to our neighborhood, you've most likely noticed that there are very few trees, especially larger trees. Well, not any more.......at least at our house. Ryan was able to get this Sycamore tree from his work and we had it transplanted here on Sunday. I can tell that Ryan is really happy to have this tree - I caught him gazing out the window at it several times yesterday.
Ryan's mom and grandpa were in town over night on Friday and we were able to get some new family photos taken. We also were able to get some lunch and provide a brief tour of Kalamazoo to Ryan's grandpa, who had never been to our house before.
Of course, Grace must be included in at least one family photo.

G6 vs. Grand Cherokee
Winner: Grand Cherokee.
I had dropped Ryan off at Orrin B. Hayes so that he could pick up his car after having some repairs done. Fortunately, he had just taken Emerson from my car (so that I could go buy some new non maternity pants) and as I was very slowly backing out of my parking spot, WHAM! A black Grand Cherokee came from nowhere and had an altercation with my pretty little G6. Luckily, nobody was hurt in our parking lot tango. And I have yet to get those new pants.
In lighter news, here are some new pictures of our little sweetie.
